Dynamism in Complex Engineering: Explaining Uncertainty Growth Through Uncertainty Masking

The development of uncertainty over the progression a project (i.e., dynamism) is central issue in engineering management; however, it has been little explored. In this article, we answer question how develops course complex engineering. We present case renewable energy power plant where performed content analysis on 54 000 e-mails. findings reveal new mechanism affecting development. call “uncertainty masking” and define as process through which “root uncertainty” misidentified by team, resulting creation management “symptomatic uncertainty.” root symptomatic types compound time hamper resolution, leading to growth level during later stages. describe impact masking u-shape project. This article contributes engineering-management literature explaining observations growth, existing theory unable explain. We, thus, significantly advance management.
